I have to be honest with you. God fried my noodle this week. I write about His love frequently and like to feel like I have a decent grasp of it. Even though I may not understand the depths of it, I feel like I’m at least in the ballpark! Well, He showed me I know nothing. Not even close.
I was driving home on a beautiful sunny morning on my way back from getting some groceries, listening to some worship music and really getting into it. Almost out of nowhere, I began to feel an inner knowing of God’s love. It’s hard to explain, but it’s almost as if I saw that God’s love not only encompasses the concept itself, but also a posture, or an eagerness.
Let me try to explain. God’s love towards us is an ever-flowing river, which means at any given moment, he is thinking about you. He is delighted in you. For example, two people can respond to a question and give the same answer on paper. But one could respond in an eager and enthusiastic tone right away, and the other could pause for a moment and drably give the same answer. Were they the same answer?
What I believe the Lord is trying to convey, is that not only does he love us, but his affection and his attention is always on us FULLY, with more enthusiasm and energy than we can imagine. I got a strong sense that most people (me included) do not understand how deeply and how strongly he loves us. If we did, our lives would look drastically different, and we would literally be glowing with light.
I think it’s easy to hear message about God’s love for us, and say “Yeah, yeah, I got it. I’ve heard that before. Tell me something new”. You may have thought that with all my repeating messages here on this page! I get it!
But I believe God is wanting to show us that there is so much depth to his love that we haven’t even begun to explore. His love is here, now, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. It’s always been and always will be. In fact, you can’t escape it. No matter how badly you feel like you’ve screwed up. Sorry, He still thinks you’re awesome.
Jesus gives an analogy in Revelation 3:20 that he stands at the door and knocks, and if we open the door to him, he will come and dine with us. What a powerful picture this is- he is ready and willing to come and have fellowship with us if only we would open the door! I think it’s easy to picture a door that we open, and we must shout out to God: “Hey you up there! I have all these prayer requests. If you would ever be so kind as to come down for a minute to talk to little old me? Hello?”.
Because many times we picture God through the lens of our earthly Fathers, we see him responding to us in this way. Mostly annoyed, but will eventually acquiesce to our requests. Has better things he’d rather be doing. What if I told you that the truth was that as soon as we open that door, He immediately rushes through to give you the biggest, most warm and tender hug you’ve ever had. You know the kind of hug you have when you haven’t seen someone in years? Yeah, that one. Where they linger just a little bit longer than you expected, but it’s OK because you realize it’s healing to you in a way you never thought you needed.
If you get nothing else out of this, simply know this. That not only does God love you, but he is also EAGER to love you and to respond to you at any given moment. His enthusiasm for you never fails! Take some time to upgrade your mental image of God’s love for you this week. I promise you, it will change you, if you let it.
