Sometimes it can be hard to remember the nearness of God. We forget that we are united with Christ, that his Holy Spirit indwells us and is present in every moment of our lives. Echoes of separation reverberate around us from the world, telling us we are not one with the eternal. That we aren’t immersed in pure uncreated light. Enemies of this light would want to remind us that we lack what we need. That it is distant and removed from us.
However, it couldn’t be more untrue. When we take communion at the Lord’s table, we are reminded of his blood that was shed and his body broken so that we could enter a common union with him. That by tasting and entering this by faith, we are reminded of our union with him. He was despised, rejected, beaten, broken and raised again, so that all barriers and hindrances to entering the eternal realm-and experiencing a real relationship with him- would be demolished. When we look on this life with a lens that we must take external steps to get to God, or fix ourselves to be worthy of him, we are missing the point.
The truth is, he is already closer to you than the air you breathe. You don’t need to do anything else to get to him. Just have faith, which means trusting, that he is already with you, and in union with you. As a united relationship, he shares in your life. What you long for, he longs for. What you feel, he feels.
I realized recently that dreams I’ve been having turned out to be answers to thoughts. I thought the dreams were random until I realized that God cared enough about me to give me a response to even my thoughts! How much he cares for us! How wonderful is his love.
We sometimes fall into the trap that we think everything depends on us, that we must boot strap it with God, and it is all on our shoulders to pray it in, to accomplish our destinies, to make sure that we cross every t and dot every i, so that we can pass the final exam. As if God is a demanding school master who needs to be pleased through our efforts and how well we perform our assignments.
The delightful truth is that he is the one who first loved us. He drew us unto himself before we even knew about him. It was his idea, and he did it according to his good pleasure. He also loves and provides for us out of the treasure of his heart. If we would only open our eyes and believe that he really does love us, we would see evidence all around us of his goodness.
He has always been with you, and always will be.
