Why do you think it was necessary that the Lord bought our freedom with a price? Does it make sense to the natural mind that a great king would give up his own life for the lives of his subjects? It depends on whose kingdom you are in.
If he were a king of wrath, do you think he would have mandated that we love one another, as he has loved us? And gave himself up for us? Would it not make more sense to enforce vindictive laws against those who have done him wrong? Would it not be more natural for him to execute punishment on the multitudes for not seeing who he was?
What was it that he said on the cross? “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” He forgave those who committed what many would call the most egregious sin: killing the son of God. And he did it without them even asking for it!
So why do we come up with our own systems that require us to vindicate ourselves in the sight of God? Is it not His doing? Is it not His decision to pardon or not pardon? Didn’t He render a verdict of not guilty? Then what charge remains against the world? Did He not say, “Peace and good will toward men?” Some act as if there remains an accusation, but if the guilt has been removed, what can we do but rejoice for freedom has come upon us!
Know this, that it is not our worthiness or unworthiness that made Him do this for us. It is because He had planned this from innumerable ages past. That we would be a shining example of his forgiveness. The Lord calls us to bask in this truth, that he has FULLY forgiven us. It wasn’t just a legal transaction; it was an act of love because He wanted to remove all hindrances to us seeing Him and seeing how much He loved us. Our sin was always blocking our view of his love. It wasn’t keeping him angry at us. That is the lie that so easily trips us up.
Let’s refresh our minds with the truth that He went to great lengths- to the ultimate length- to ensure that no trace of sin would ever be found in His people again. He removed it because he wanted it removed, and he wanted to enjoy His family in the way He intended us to be from the very beginning. This is His greatest joy: That He would be able to fellowship in the fullness of unity with his people, with no death or darkness anywhere in sight.
Feast your eyes on this exhilarating reality- that He is always for you. The Savior of the world spared no expense to make you his own. This is your birthright. This is your legacy of fulfillment. The joy of the Lord shall be your portion from this day forward and forever more.
Father,
I thank you for your endless love. I thank you for making a way with your son to come and destroy all barriers to knowing you and your love. Thank you for refreshing my vision to see how greatly I am loved, and that sin has been dealt with forever- I don’t need to give it any power anymore. Thank you for helping me to keep my eyes on this glorious truth and giving me strength to remain here with you. This is where I want to stay for all eternity. Amen.
